Release El-Zakzaky’s Wife For COVID-19 Treatment, Court Tells Kaduna Prison

A Kaduna State High Court has directed the Kaduna Prison Service to release Zeenat, wife of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El–Zakzaky, for COVID-19 treatment.

In the ruling delivered on Monday, the presiding judge, Justice Gideon Kurada, ordered that Zeenat be immediately moved to a government isolation facility to begin treatment for the virus.

Before the judgement, counsel to El-Zakzaky, Femi Falana (SAN) had presented a medical report to back up his argument for the release of Zeenat.

He asked the court to allow Zeenat to seek medical treatment outside the prison facility in order not to put her live in great danger.

However, the presiding judge, granted the request after Chris Umar, the prosecuting counsel, concurred with Falana’s submission.

Naija News had reported that the son of the IMN leader, Mohammed said his mother, Zeenat, tested positive for COVID-19 at the Kaduna correctional centre after the family lawyer visited her parents at the facility.

However, authorities at the Kaduna correctional service said Zeenat has undergone COVID-19 treatment but her test results are not yet back.

Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in detention since 2015 after his followers clashed with soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna.

The IMN leader is standing trial for alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, and disruption of public peace.
