No fewer than eight persons were reportedly killed by armed bandits in a gun duel with residents of Dutsin Gari and Rayau communities of Maru local government area of Zamfara state.

Reports made available to newsmen confirmed that the bandits raided the two villages on motorcycles on Monday evening, January 18, 2021.

A resident, Malam Ibro Mamman, who claimed to have witnessed the horrible event told newsmen that the bandits stormed the two communities with the intention of kidnapping people but were countered by the villagers.

Mamman said the gunmen exchanged gunshots for several hours with the villagers who repelled their attack in full force.

“When the bandits realized that they could not succeed in their nefarious activity, they opened fire and killed six people, injured many before they moved to a nearby village called Rayau,” Mamman narrated.

He added: “In Rayau Village, the bandits also faced similar challenges from the villagers who were battle-ready on receiving the report of what happened in Dutsin Gari village.

“The villagers came out in large number and engaged the bandits in a gun battle where two of the villagers lost their lives and the bandits left without abducting anybody.”

The eyewitness revealed further that the bandits again entered the villages on Tuesday morning only to discover that the residents have fled to Kanoma town for fear of reprisal attack. Mamman noted that many houses and properties were set ablaze by the bandits as they could not find their targets on their return.
