To commemorate the United Nations International Day of peace, the Peace Corps of Nigeria in collaboration with Rotary International District 9125, and other partners held a candle light procession and Peace prayers to mark event
The celebration of the 2023 Un- International Day of Peace took place on Thursday 21 September, with theme “ACTIONS FOR PEACE” which calls for actions to promote peace and security in Nigeria and around the World. The event, which was held at the Unity Fountain Abuja, featured media interaction, a candlelight procession, tree planting, and painting of the Unity Fountain.
The National Commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps Amb. Dickson Akoh, in his welcoming address took cognizance and heartily expressed appreciation to the collaborating partners for their continuous support, and their diligent efforts in tackling the hydra-headed security challenges confronting the Nation.
Akoh notes that this year’s International Day of Peace theme is apt and timely, as it’s focuses on deep reflection on the challenges we face as a people and collectively work towards a more peaceful and harmonious society for the future generation. He said it is geared towards safeguarding the human rights of the people with view of building peaceful and inclusive societies without recourse to ethnic or religious sentiments.
The National Commandant restated that the cardinal objective of the Peace Corps since inception has been to help combat insecurity and promote peace in the Nation. “We are being confronted with a profound singular enemy, which is insecurity, but we can overcome these challenges if all Nigerians work together to promote peace and unity” He said.
Mr Sani Ahmed Governor of Rotary International District 9125, Amb. AdeMario Emmanuel Director General of the Coalition of Nigeria Youths on Security and Safety Affairs(CONYSSA) in their various address Call on Nigerians to all advocate for peace.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in his message to mark the International Day of Peace, said that “our world needs peace – now more than ever”. He said that conflict, rising inequalities, persistent injustices, humanity’s war on nature, and a global financial system that is outdated, dysfunctional, and unfair are blocking the path to peace.
The International Day of Peace is celebrated annually on September 21. It is a day to promote peace and unity around the world
