Police Issue Statement On Killing Of Unidentified Man In Enugu

An ex-soldier alleged to be part of the gang of criminals responsible for the jailbreak in Imo State earlier in the year has been arrested by the police.

The suspect, identified as Godwin Chukwuemeka was arrested by the Imo State Command of the Nigeria Police.

He is said to be a dismissed soldier who fled from fighting insurgency in the northeast and has confessed to have been part of the hoodlums responsible for the jailbreak in Imo state during an attack on the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and the police command headquarters in Owerri back in April 2020.

Naija News recalls on April 5, gunmen attacked the government facilities in Imo and freed 1,844 inmates from the correctional facility.

Parading the arrested suspect on Monday, Mike Abatam, special adviser on media to the state commissioner of police, said Chukuemeka has already confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Items recovered from him included military camouflage, desert boots, and weapons.

“Following reliable information, tactical teams of the Imo command stormed the hideout of a notorious suspected criminal in the Owerri Nekede area, where one Godwin Chukwuemeka, aka Match and Die, 35, was arrested inside the ceiling of his residence,” he said.

“The suspect is alleged to be a dismissed soldier of the Nigerian army. On interrogation, he confessed to being among the hoodlums, who attacked the Imo state police command headquarters and the correctional centre, Owerri, earlier this year.

“Meanwhile, the following items were recovered from the suspect: a cut-to-size double-barrelled gun, a black browning pistol, two live cartridges, one expended cartridge, military camouflage and desert boots.

“The commissioner of police urged the officers and men of the command to sustain the tempo of the moment. He commends the good people of the state for their support and solicits an all-society approach to improve security in the state.”

Chukwuemeka confirmed to journalists on the ground during the parade that he fled the military camp in the northeast because of the insurgency in the region.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, has said arrested members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) will be arraigned for murder.

The police boss said the suspects who were unleashing violent crimes on the state would not be allowed to go uncharged.
