One of the lawyers on the team of the embattled former chairman of Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, Anayo Adibe has alleged that his client is sick and in urgent need of medical attention.
Adibe claimed that Maina suffered a partial stroke while been held in custody at the Kuje correctional center.
The lawyer made the claim in a recent interview with We FM and wants Maina to be granted bail on health grounds to enable him treat himself.
Though he acknowledged the doctors at the correctional center are doing their best, he said their effort is not enough and his client’s life is in danger if he is not allowed to get better treatment.
Adibe said Maina is in a “very bad shape.”
“I visited him at the prison about a week ago and from the visit, he was not looking fine at all.”
“I was told he had suffered a mild stroke, his blood pressure has been very high and his sugar level has risen astronomically. He is in a very bad shape.”
“The resident doctor has written several letters to the authorities asking that he be taken to a better and well equipped medical facility. Those letters have not been responded to,” he said.
“As his lawyers, we have taken a step further. We have written the comptroller-general, informing him of the dire situation our client finds himself presently and that except he is afforded quick medical attention, the story might change very soon because the truth is that we fear for his life.”
Naija News reports the court has fixed Wednesday, January 20, to hear the bail application on health grounds filed by Maina’s lawyer.
It will be recalled that Maina who is standing trial on 12 counts bordering on money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier jumped bail.
He was however re-arrested in Niger Republic and extradited to Nigeria to continue facing his trial.
It will be recalled that Maina fainted in court during his last appearance before he was remanded at the Kuje correctional center.
