World Boxing Council (WBC) has rated Cameroonian cross-over boxer Francis Ngannou as one of the major contenders for the WBC title.

The WBC is the sanctioning body responsible for maintaining its world rankings, just like the IBF, WBO, and WBA.

Tyson Fury, the current holder of the WBC, won’t get a mandatory opponent for the title until next year.

The British heavyweight boxer is expected to take on WBA, WBO, and IBF champion Oleksandr Usyk in an undisputed heavyweight match in February 2024.

This will mark the first time since 1999, that two unbeaten boxers will square off for the undisputed heavyweight title.

While the world is awaiting the record-breaking bout, Francis Ngannou who is a former UFC heavyweight champion, stunned boxing enthusiasts when he crossed to boxing and almost defeated the reigning WBC champion, Fury in Saudi Arabia last month.

Due to his outstanding performance in the non-title fight against the British heavyweight boxer, the 37-year-old Ngannou, now has the chance to challenge Fury for the WBC title.

The WBC ranked Ngannou as the 10th contender for the WBC during their 2023 convention. This means that the Cameroonian is 7 places behind 3rd-rated Anthony Joshua and 8 places behind second-rated Deontay Wilder.

Recall that Ngannou has previously been linked with bouts against former world champions Wilder and Joshua.

Instead of facing Ngannou, Joshua and Wilder will fight other boxers on the same card in Saudi Arabia on December 23.

Their respective outings in Saudi Arabia will launch their potential face-off against each other in 2024.
