Buhari Govt Suspends Accountant-General Of The Federation, Ahmed Idris Over EFCC Probe

The Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government has suspended the embattled Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris.
Naija News reports that the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr. Zainab Ahmed, suspended Ahmed Idris from office over his alleged involvement in fraud being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Recall the anti-corruption commission had arrested Idris in connection with an alleged N80 billion fraud.
EFCC’s spokesman, Wilson Uwajaren, confirmed Idris’s arrest on Monday after he failed to honour the invitations of the operatives.
The anti-graft agency stated that Idris allegedly diverted funds and laundered N80 billion.
The anti-graft agency accused the AGF of laundering the funds through real estate investments in Kano and Abuja.
According to the commission, Idris raked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members and close associates.
“The Commission’s verified intelligence showed that the AGF raked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members and close associates.
“Mr. Idris was arrested after failing to honour invitations by the EFCC to respond to issues connected to the fraudulent acts,” the statement read in part

The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation has announced that 10 candidates have advanced to the next stage in the rigorous selection process for the position of Accountant-General of the Federation.
In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Head of Service, Eno Olotu, the development follows the release of results from a written examination that assessed candidates’ expertise in public financial management, auditing, and fiscal policy.
Naija News gathered that out of 15 candidates who sat for the examination, 10 passed and will now proceed to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) proficiency test, scheduled for Thursday, February 13, 2025.
The ICT test is a crucial component of the selection process, designed to evaluate candidates’ ability to leverage technology in modern financial administration.
Government Reaffirms Commitment To Merit-Based Recruitment
Speaking on the development, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and merit-based recruitment.
She said, “This process reflects our dedication to appointing only the most capable individuals to leadership roles in public financial management.
“We are confident that this approach will ensure accountability, integrity, and efficiency in managing public funds.”
Walson-Jack further praised the rigorous nature of the selection process, emphasising its importance in identifying professionals with both technical expertise and strong leadership qualities.
New Appointment To Replace Outgoing Accountant-General
The vacancy for Accountant-General of the Federation arises as the tenure of the current officeholder, Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, is set to expire on March 7, 2025.
The final appointee will be responsible for overseeing Nigeria’s public finances, ensuring transparency and efficiency in national financial management.
The statement reiterated that fairness and equity remain central to the selection process.
“This recruitment process is guided by meritocracy and ensures that only those with proven competence advance,” the statement read.
The successful candidates from this stage will proceed to further evaluations, including an oral interview conducted by a panel comprising experts from both public and private sectors.

Former Accountant-General of the Federation, Jonah Ogunnyi Otunla, has reportedly passed away in the United Kingdom on Monday, June 17.
A source disclosed that the former AGF recently travelled to the UK for treatment of a yet-to-be disclosed ailment.
“I can tell you that he died in the hours between Sunday June 17 and Monday June 17”, the source told Leadership.
“While alive, he faced prosecution from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“He was being hounded in connection with two cases — the alleged diversion of about N24 billion meant for disengaged staff of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and N2 billion allegedly received from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
“Along the line, he refunded to the Federal Government to the tune of a few billion naira,” the source added
Otunla had a distinguished career in finance, serving on the board of the Central Bank of Nigeria and as accountant-general of Oyo State in 1989.
He later joined the Federal Civil Service and was appointed accountant-general of the federation by former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.
Otunla retired from the civil service in 2015. However, his legacy was marred by allegations of corruption, with accusations of diverting billions of naira in public funds.
He had been in and out of court facing charges related to these allegations until his death.
Tinubu Travels To South Africa On Tuesday
In other news, President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to travel from Lagos to Pretoria, South Africa, on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, to participate in the presidential inauguration of Cyril Ramaphosa.
The inauguration of Ramaphosa follows his re-election as President for a second term.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by the presidency, signed by Tinubu’s special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
President Tinubu will return to Nigeria after the ceremony according to the statement.
