A devastating oil tanker explosion in Niger State on Saturday claimed numerous lives and left many others injured.
Naija News gathered that the tragic incident occurred at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) reportedly exploded as residents attempted to scoop fuel from the overturned vehicle.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the explosion left many victims burnt beyond recognition.
While the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, reports suggest that up to 100 people may have lost their lives, with several others sustaining severe burns.
Channels Television correspondents who visited the site refrained from sharing graphic visuals of the incident because they were disturbing.
Reacting to the tragedy, Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, expressed profound shock and grief.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the explosion as “heartbreaking, worrisome, and unfortunate.”
Governor Bago extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured. He urged citizens to prioritize safety and avoid actions that could lead to such disasters.
Furthermore, the Governor directed relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to take immediate action and called on security operatives to ensure the area remained secure after the explosion.
