What Okorocha Said About Forfeiture Of His Properties

Imo West Senator, Rochas Okorocha has accused his state governor Hope Uzodinma of being behind the move to recall him from the Senate.

Okorocha who described those behind the move to recall him from the Senate as ‘political undertakers’ also further accused Uzodinma of paying 1bn to the Orlu Political Consultative Assembly (OPOCA) to initiate the move for his recall.

Okorocha in a statement on Wednesday through his spokesperson, Sam Onwuemeodo, in Owerri, the Imo state capital said OPOCA is motivated by money to initiate his recall.

He also alleged that the group doesn’t consist of credible individuals but politicians only motivated by their pockets.

Senator Okorocha, therefore, urged Governor Uzodinma to channel the money he is using to bankroll his recall from the Senate to pay salaries and pensions in Imo State and execute other meaningful projects for the people.

His statement reads in part: “A group known as Orlu Political Consultative Assembly, OPOCA, has told its audience that it was going to recall the Senator, Representing Imo West Senatorial District, Owelle Rochas Okorocha from the Senate and for whatever is their reason.

“We would have ignored the “adult delinquents”, but for those who might not know the history or story of the elements behind OPOCA, we have decided to react accordingly.

“Those behind OPOCA are Political undertakers who glory in absurdities, simply to enlarge their coast or make their leaking pockets fat. And not just for any meaningful venture, but for leisure and pleasure.

“For those who do not know the group, the characters in OPOCA were the same people who carried the mock coffin of Chief Arthur Nzeribe when he was in the Senate and they did that to please Chief Achike Udenwa, who was governor then.

“They were also the same group that confined Chief Achike Udenwa to their Hall of shame. They did that to please Chief Ikedi Ohakim who was governor then.

“In 2015, the same group wrote petition to the Inspector General of Police against Chief Hope Uzodinma alleging assault. They did that to please Rochas Okorocha who was governor then and they had done that, thinking that Okorocha would make them commissioners. But Okorocha was not interested in the group using him to fight anybody. He rather appointed two of them Special Advisers.

“Chief Samfo Nwankwo, may his soul rest in peace, had died, but Chief Anunobi, out of anger, decided to join forces with those who had gathered against Okorocha. And that was how he declared to run for the position of the National Publicity Secretary of the APC at the last Convention of the party against Barr. Emma Ibediro who had the backing of Okorocha.

“Today, he is a commissioner in Uzodinma’s government and unlike Owelle Okorocha, governor Uzodinma has found the remaining members of the group willing tools to continue to prosecute his war of attrition against Okorocha.

“We have heard that they have been given N1 billion for the recall gimmick. Our only advice is that the governor should use the money to help in paying workers, teachers, pensioners and so on, who have not been paid for several months and there is no sign all the end of the tunnel.

“We are also worried that with the deteriorated security situation in the state, some people with the backing of the state government, would be engaging in activities that would further submerge the security situation in the State.

“It is our candid position that the government should not drag traditional rulers into messy political outings. Under governor Uzodinma, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Christian Association of Nigeria, Pensioners Association, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Nigeria Labour Congress, have all been destroyed. Now, the traditional institution. All these do not speak well of the administration.”

It will be recalled as earlier reported by Naija News that Okorocha’s kinsmen, under the platform of Orlu Political Consultative Assembly (OPOCA), have started mobilizing across the 12 council areas of Imo West to recall the ex-governor.

It was learned that major stakeholders in the zone comprising the traditional rulers, Elders’ Council and the 12 Interim Management Committee (IMC) Chairmen presiding over the 12 LGAs in the Orlu Senatorial District (Imo West), openly met last Monday to endorse the recall process.

Meanwhile, Uzodinma’s Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Modestus Nwamkpa, has warned Okorocha to stop dropping the name of his principal in his recall ordeal, noting that the Governor is focused on leading the people.

“Okorocha should stop provoking Imo people. The governor is very busy with issues of governance and it is important Okorocha deals his recall ordeal without mentioning our hard working governor,” Nwamkpa said.

Uzodimma Approves ₦104,000 Minimum Wage For Imo Civil Servants

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 for civil servants in the state.

Naija News reports that the governor announced the increase during a meeting with labour union leaders on Tuesday night at the Government House, Owerri.

According to the governor, the wage adjustment raises the minimum salary for workers from ₦76,000 to ₦104,000.

Other categories of workers also received upward reviews:

  • Doctors’ minimum pay rose from ₦215,000 to ₦503,000.
  • Teachers in tertiary institutions had their salaries increased from ₦119,000 to ₦222,000.

Uzodimma said the decision was informed by the need to ease the economic hardship confronting workers.

“When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows. This is our way of investing in Imo people,” he said.

The governor highlighted the challenges faced since his administration assumed office in 2020, ranging from insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, subsidy removal, and disputes over wages.

“We tried as a government to always put it behind our mind that there is no way any government will do well if it doesn’t have a friendly and cordial relationship with the organised labour,” Uzodimma stated.

He added that the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) had increased from ₦400 million to over ₦3 billion per month, while allocations from the Federation Account grew from ₦5-₦7 billion in 2020 to about ₦14 billion.

Uzodimma also disclosed that the state debt profile had reduced from ₦280 billion in 2020 to less than ₦100 billion.

The governor acknowledged the hardship caused by fuel subsidy removal but insisted the policy had long-term benefits.

“It is a thing of joy that we have started seeing the dividends of that bold decision of President Bola Tinubu to remove fuel subsidy. What government is confronted with now is how to ensure that the dividends of that policy trickle down to the common man on the street,” he said.

Uzodinma assured that transparency in resource allocation was key to sustaining reforms.

The Governor further revealed that the state government would commence the payment of the last batch of gratuities owed to pensioners, amounting to ₦16 billion, on August 27.

He added that his administration had introduced a health insurance scheme, equipped health facilities, and keyed into the Federal Government’s initiative of establishing 1,000 businesses in every active INEC ward.

The governor urged labour unions to foster unity with government and charged workers to avoid unethical practices and redundancy.

The state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, described the wage increase as a major win for Imo workers.

“Today, no worker in Imo will say you (Uzodimma) have not been fair to us. You rescued us from economic challenges and placed Imo among the highest-paying states in Nigeria,” he said.

He prayed for the governor’s protection, assuring that workers would reciprocate through diligent service delivery.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Uchenna Ibe, lauded the governor’s “strong political will” in increasing wages and implementing reforms.
