Liverpool winger, Luis Diaz, gave his father a big reason to smile again days after he gained freedom from kidnappers in Colombia.
Luis Diaz’s father named, Luis Manuel Diaz, was in the stands when the Liverpool winger led Colombia to beat Brazil at the Estadio Metropolitano earlier today, November 17.
During the game, Brazil took the lead through Gabriel Martinelli of Arsenal in the fourth minute, but later in the first half, they lost Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid due to an injury.
But Diaz’s game-winning double secured a noteworthy triumph that propelled Colombia past their competitors and into third place in the South American 2026 World Cup qualifiers standings.
After his first goal, Diaz was surrounded by teammates and staff as they celebrated the goal in an emotional scene.
After his equalizer in the 75th minute, the 26-year-old gestured to the crowd, and TV cameras captured his tearful-eyed father, who was celebrating with his arms raised while sporting a Colombia shirt.
After the 2-1 victory over Brazil, Diaz admitted that he had experienced “hard moments” recently, adding, “I think football, and not just football, but life, makes you strong and brave.”
He continued: “I’m grateful to my teammates, to the coaching staff who were always there for me at every moment.
“And I dedicate the victory to the people, who deserved it.”
Recall that this victory came about two days after he was reunited with his father, who was kidnapped by the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group in Colombia on October 28.
Diaz’s father was kidnapped alongside his wife, Cilenis Marulanda but she was released hours after the kidnap. However, it took a large-scale search and rescue effort before her 58-year-old spouse regained his freedom 13 days later.
