Former English professional footballer, Roger Hunt (MBE) has died.
Naija News reports that the former Liverpool forward died at the age of 83. Hunt’s demise is coming just a few hours ahead of the Reds’ Champions League clash with FC Porto.
The deceased made history with Liverpool during his career days. Hunt is Liverpool’s second-highest goalscorer of all time with 285 goals in 492 appearances.
The footballer is said to have passed away peacefully at his home following a long illness on Monday evening.
Expressing their heartfelt with the death of the former player, Liverpool in an official statement on Tuesday said: “We are mourning the passing of legendary former player Roger Hunt,”
“The thoughts of everybody at Liverpool Football Club are with Roger’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.”
Naija News understands that the 1966 World Cup winner joined the Reds from nearby amateur team Stockton Heath as a 20-year-old in July 1958 and spent 11-and-a-half hugely successful years at Anfield.
Hunt made his debut in a 2-0 win over Scunthorpe United at Anfield in September 1959 – and, naturally, marked the occasion with a goal.
His overall tally of 285 goals for the Reds stood as a record until Ian Rush surpassed it in 1992. To date, no player has scored more league goals for Liverpool than Hunt’s total of 244.
Meanwhile, former France international Samir Nasri has announced his retirement from football.
Naija News reports that the 34-year old announced his decision on Sunday on Canal+, a media outlet where he is now a pundit.
