Former Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire, has turned down the opportunity of joining West Ham United and has insisted on staying at Old Trafford.
Harry Maguire who has lost his captaincy armband and his place in coach Erik ten Hag’s starting eleven was on the verge of moving to West Ham after United agreed on a £30 million transfer fee for the England international.
Things got a bit twisted in terms of the payoff Manchester United were supposed to hand out to Harry Maguire since he still has two years on his contract and was expected to earn less at West Ham.
Reports claimed that Maguire wanted nothing less than £15 million as a payoff from the Red Devils, a demand United were unwilling to accept.
Since both parties were not able to reach a compromise on the payoff and Harry Maguire wants to remain at a Champions League playing club, he decided to snub West Ham’s offer.
On the other hand, United have steadfastly affirmed that they would respect his preferences and did not wish to compel him to leave the club which makes Maguire’s decision to remain at Old Trafford easier.
According to a source close to the player, Maguire “respects West Ham and David Moyes,” but there was “never an agreement in place” about his terms.
The source added: “Harry remains settled at United, loves the club, and believes he will get plenty of opportunities to play this season.”
Ahead of Monday’s 1-0 win over Wolves, Ten Hag said that Maguire would be better off leaving United if he lacked the self-assurance necessary to compete for a spot in the club’s first team.
During the game, Ten Hag made five substitutions and switched center back Lisandro Martinez for Victor Lindelof at halftime but didn’t deem it fit to play Maguire.
