₦555 Million Fine: Fidelity Bank Reacts To NDPC’s Data Breach Allegations
Fidelity Bank has strongly contested the allegations of a data breach brought against it by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the bank’s spokesperson, Meksley Nwagboh, asserted that Fidelity Bank did not violate any data protection laws that would justify the ₦555.8 million fine imposed by the NDPC.
Naija News earlier reported that the NDPC had accused the bank of violating customer data privacy and, as a result, levied the hefty fine.
According to the commission, Fidelity Bank breached the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) of 2019 and the Nigeria Data Protection (NDP) Act of 2023.
Additionally, the commission criticized the bank for its lack of cooperation during the investigation, which led to the penalty.
In response, Fidelity Bank maintained that it had adhered to the highest ethical standards, ensuring full compliance with existing data protection laws.
“As a Bank, we remain in discussions with the NDPC over an amicable resolution to this matter,” Nwagboh stated in the release.
