Demand for stockfish is showing little sign of slowing despite a 30% drop in the price in 2026.
With a stockfish market value of over $400 million and an annual import of more than 160,000 metric tonnes, Nigeria imports its stockfish mainly from Iceland and Norway.
Market survey shows that as of January 2026, the price of medium-sized stockfish was ₦15, 000, dropping to ₦11, 500 in August. This leaves a year-to-date price change of -30.4%.

While appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Business Incorporated on Tuesday, Ayobami Olatunji, an analyst with Financial Derivatives, noted that the price drop was due to stability in the naira in the first half of 2026 by 5 per cent, which resulted in a drop in the landing cost of importing stockfish.
According to her, there is also an increase in supply of stockfish head as a more affordable option than the medium-sized stockfish.
She, however, noted that demand persists despite an elevated price tag of ₦11,500 for medium-sized stockfish.
