Matthew Page, an associate fellow of Chatham House, London, United Kingdom, advised investigators to focus on the real estate and education sectors when fighting corruption and money laundering.
He made the suggestion while presenting a research paper titled ‘IFFs through the real estate and education sectors: Implications for Investigators’ at a virtual capacity-building forum for investigators on investigating Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs), on Tuesday.
The forum was organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and participants were selected from other law enforcement agencies.
According to Premium Times, Mr Page emphasized the need to keep an eye on both sides – the construction and education sectors because they provide opportunities for Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) in Nigeria to launder money.
“Most of the property held by Nigerian politicians in London and Dubai are held by proxies, family and shell companies.
“Over 800 properties worth over $400 million have been linked to Nigerian PEPs,” Mr Page said.
