SDP Mourns As Kaduna Zonal Chairman Dies In Auto Crash

Coalition: SDP Is Not For Sale - Adesina

The Kaduna State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of its Zone One Chairman, Bashir Zakariya, who died in a motor accident along the Zaria–Kaduna Expressway on Thursday.

Party officials confirmed that Zakariya was travelling from Zaria to Kaduna when the accident occurred along the busy highway. He was reportedly confirmed dead at the scene.

In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Darius Kurah, the SDP described the late Zakariya as “a man of integrity, courage and vision” who devoted his life to justice, democracy, and grassroots mobilisation.

The statement reads, “Zakariya stood for truth, spoke with conviction, and worked tirelessly to grow the SDP in Zone One and beyond.

“His memory will remain a guiding light to the party and the people of Kaduna State.”

Party members recounted Zakariya’s commitment to the party, recalling that he had made the Zaria–Kaduna trip numerous times in the service of building support for the SDP across the state.

His sudden death, they said, leaves “a huge vacuum” in the opposition party’s leadership structure, particularly in the politically active North-West region.

Sympathisers, party members, and political associates have begun paying condolence visits to Zakariya’s family residence in Kaduna.

The SDP urged the Kaduna State Government and federal road agencies to intensify efforts to address the rising number of fatal accidents on the Zaria–Kaduna Expressway, a notorious corridor for road mishaps.
