A chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and key member of the newly formed opposition coalition, Nasir El-Rufai, has disclosed that plans are underway to register a new political party as a back-up platform to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Naija News reports that El-Rufai made the disclosure during an interview with Radio France International (RFI) Hausa Service on Wednesday night, stating that the move is aimed at safeguarding the coalition from potential sabotage by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former Kaduna State governor explained that while the ADC has been adopted as the official platform for the opposition’s 2027 agenda, there are concerns that the APC may infiltrate and destabilise the party.
El-Rufai said, “The opposition parties’ alliance in the ADC is temporary, and we may register a new party as a second option, which we will move to should the ADC be instigated into crisis by the government.”
He also alleged that the APC-led government has weaponised anti-corruption agencies to intimidate political opponents who refuse to join its ranks.
“Those who refuse to join the APC face threats of investigations by agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), or Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB),” he said.
El-Rufai warned that the ruling party may incite long-standing members of the ADC to resist the coalition’s leadership, thereby creating internal conflict that could derail the alliance’s momentum.
“There is a tendency that the APC might instigate crisis within the ADC by inciting old members against the new leadership,” he noted.
