Super Falcons of Nigeria forward, Asisat Oshoala finished in the 20th spot in the 2023 Women’s official Ballon d’Or ranking.
The 29-year-old Ikorodu-born Asisat Oshoala was the only African woman footballer who was nominated for the award and was also the first woman’s footballer from Africa to finish in the top 20 of the Ballon d’Or.
Recall that in the 2022-2023 season which was used to nominate Oshoala and other nominees for the 2023 Ballon d’Or, the Nigeria international helped FC Barcelona women’s team to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Supercopa de España Femenina, and Primera División.
The Nigerian striker who has won the African Best Player of the Year award a record five times scored 21 goals and provided 3 assists in 28 games last season.
Hence, it was not a surprise that she finished as the 20th-ranked female player in the 2023 Ballon d’Or. Her club teammate, Aitana Bonmati of Spain was named the 2023 women’s Ballon d’Or winner.
In reaction to Oshoala’s feat, Super Falcons’ official X handle, posted: “Asisat Oshoala’s 20th place ranking in the 2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or is a historic and significant achievement for Africa.
“She’s a talented footballer and deserves the recognition. “Congratulations @AsisatOshoala”.
So far this season, Asisat Oshoala has played five games for the FC Barcelona women’s team and has scored three goals. If she continues with her current form, she might break into the top ten in the 2024 edition of the global award.
