The manager of Manchester United, Erik ten Hag has urged his new signing, Andre Onana, who has been struggling as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, to emulate the club’s legends.
Erik ten Hag brought in Andre Onana from Inter Milan as a replacement for David de Gea on July 20, 2023, for a transfer fee worth €52.50 million.
Even though Ten Hag brought in the Cameroonian goalkeeper whom he coached at Ajax between 2015 and 2022, to add value to his United’s squad, he has become more of a liability.
For instance, in the eight Premier League appearances that Andre Onana has made in Manchester United’s colours, the Cameroon international has conceded a whopping 12 goals and managed to keep just two clean sheets.
Onana has made some avoidable blunders that have cost Manchester United some games. Hence, some fans of the club are already urging Ten Hag to try another goalkeeper.
In reaction to the woes of Onana, Erik ten Hag said, “Big United keepers like Schmeichel and De Gea didn’t start too well.
“For Andre, it is good to know that little bit of history. He knows, we know, he will do much better.”
He added, “Every player who’s coming into the Premier League needs an integration period,” Ten Hag said.
“But he has to step up. He will do it, I’m sure he will. I’m sure we will have a lot of joy with him.”
Andre Onana is expected to be between the sticks for Manchester United when they take on Sheffield United at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 21.
