9 Feared Dead In Shooting Spree On High School Kids In Kazan

A shooting spree by unknown gunmen has claimed at least nine people including schoolchildren in the central Russian city of Kazan.

A report by news agencies revealed that at least eight pupils were killed in the attack which happened on Tuesday, May 11.

Naija News learnt that the two unidentified assailants stormed the school and opened fire at the children, killing nine and left at least ten more people with degrees of injuries. “Eight schoolchildren and a teacher were killed,” a source told the Interfax news agency.

It was gathered that a 17-year-old boy had been detained moments after the sporadic shooting while the police have commenced an investigation on the incident. However, efforts to gather more details on the incident proved abortive as spokespersons for police and the emergencies ministry refused to make any comment as at the time of filing this report.

Images broadcast on state television from the scene showed dozens of people outside the school building with fire services and police vehicles lining nearby streets.

A source told the Interfax news agency that a second shooter had barred himself in on the fourth floor of the building. The TASS state news agency, citing sources in the emergency services, said that “10 people had been injured and were rushed to hospital.”

“I was in class, I first heard an explosion, then gunshots,” TASS quoted a teacher of the school as saying.

Tatarstan President, Rustam Minnikhanov, is said to have arrived at the scene of the shooting, while the city administration was cited as saying that children were evacuated from the school and that security had been bolstered at other educational facilities in the city.

Meanwhile, an NGO, Action Group on Free Civic Space in Nigeria, has alleged that bodies of murdered victims by SARS operatives were sold to University Teaching Hospitals as cadavers for the teaching and practice of medicine in tertiary institutions.

The organisation made the call when it presented its report on alleged police misconduct to the Police Service Commission (PSC), Naija News reports.
