Why National Population Census Was Fixed For 2023 - Presidency

The Presidency on Monday disclosed the reason the National Population Census was scheduled to hold in 2023.

Naija News recalls that the Federal Government had said that the national population census is scheduled to hold between March and April 2023.

Briefing State House Correspondents after the Council of State meeting held last week Thursday, Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State said the census will take place after 16 years.

Governor Badaru said this was part of the resolutions reached by the Council of State during their meeting inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

In an interview with Trust TV, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, said the census was fixed in order to address the security challenges facing the country and not for political gain.

He stated that the Muhammadu Buhari government can conduct a population census and also curb the rising cases of insecurity ravaging the nation.

Shehu, therefore, asked Nigerians to give the government the benefit of doubt as it delivered on the Anambra governorship election despite the security situation in the state and the South East.

Meanwhile, Popular Nigerian lawyer, Afe Babalola (SAN) has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to postpone the 2023 general elections and set up an interim government.

Babalola said the interim government should be in place for six months after the expiration of President Buhari’s tenure and should draft a new constitution that is people-oriented to replace the current 1999 constitution that is currently operational in Nigeria.

According to the legal luminary, the step will give the opportunity to correct some of the challenges such as insecurity and poor economy which Nigeria is battling with.

In his view, the presidential system of government is too expensive for Nigeria and there is a need to embrace true federalism.
