Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said his government would not have issues with paying the approved ₦70,000 minimum wage.
Governor Seyi Makinde said his administration has been paying ₦55,000 to all civil servants in the state since October 2023.
Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, said this in an interview with The Nation, on Friday.
Olanrewaju said Makinde had made promise to Oyo State workers that his administration would pay whatever the federal government and organized labour agreed as minimum wage.
He said the Oyo State government remains committed to keeping the promise as soon as Minimum Wage Act is passed.
Olanrewaju said: “At the event marking Workers’ Day on May 1, 2024, Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, promised to pay whatever the national minimum wage is.
“That promise stands. So, Oyo will pay the new minimum wage.”
Speaking further on what the state government currently pays, the Chief Press Secretary added, “The current minimum wage in Oyo is ₦30,000 but since October 2023 the state has been paying ₦25,000 wage award.
“This means the state has been paying ₦55,000 minimum wage since October last year without owing a single month.
He said transiting from ₦55,000 to the agreed ₦70,000 would not herculean task. “Transiting from ₦55,000 to ₦70,000 will not be too herculean,” he said.
