We Support Minimum Wage Increase - PDP Governors

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have declared support for the demand by organized labour for an increase in the minimum wage by workers.

After their meeting, in Enugu, on Wednesday, the PDP governors said the negotiation was becoming unduly protracted.

In a communique, read by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, they called for consideration to be given to the ability of states to pay any agreed amount.

The minimum wage negotiation is becoming unduly protracted in the face of the unprecedented hardship and impoverishment of the majority of the people.

“The labour demand for salary raise is eminently justified and commands the total support of the forum.

“While the Forum fully supports labour’s demand, agreement must take into consideration the ability to pay by the subnational, the Federal government and the third tier of government,” Bala read.

PDP governors, however, called for restraint in both utterances and actions from all involved in the negotiation process.

All negotiations are ongoing. We appeal for restraint in both utterances and actions that could lead to a complete breakdown of law and order and ultimately the collapse of the economy,” the communique added.

The opposition party governors further accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) led federal government of mismanaging the economy.

PDP governors said the economic hardship in the country was caused by wrong economic policies of the ruling party.
