Kenya’s Vice-President, Rigathi Gachagua, is facing impeachment proceedings initiated by the national assembly, stemming from accusations of supporting the violent anti-government protests that shook the country in June.
Gachagua has also been accused of corruption, fostering ethnic divisions, and engaging in actions deemed incompatible with the responsibilities of his office.
Naija News understands that lawmakers claim he accumulated assets valued at 5.2 billion shillings ($40 million) since the last election, despite earning an annual salary of $93,000. Among these assets is the famous Treetops Hotel in Kenya.
In response to these allegations, Gachagua has maintained that his wealth is derived from legitimate business ventures and an inheritance from his late brother.
Following the protests, President William Ruto reshuffled his cabinet, removing key figures and replacing them with members from the opposition. A week ago, Ruto’s allies initiated the impeachment motion against Gachagua.
The vice-president sought intervention from the high court to halt the proceedings, but his request was denied.
During a prayer gathering at his residence on Sunday, Gachagua publicly asked President Ruto, lawmakers, and the Kenyan public for forgiveness if he had wronged them.
However, on Monday, he clarified that this plea was not an admission of guilt and dismissed rumours of his potential resignation.
Gachagua also criticized the lawmaker who initiated the motion, calling the accusations “shameful and sensational.”
The national assembly is expected to debate the motion on Tuesday, with a vote to follow before the matter moves to the senate. Gachagua has vowed to vigorously defend himself.
