Nigerian and Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface, will not be joining AC Milan after the Serie A club pulled out of a deal due to concerns over his medical history.
According to German outlet BILD, Victor Boniface underwent four separate medicals in Italy over the weekend before the Rossoneri decided against completing the move.
Milan had agreed terms with Leverkusen for a deal worth €5 million on loan with a €24 million option to buy. However, doubts about Boniface’s long-term fitness forced the club to abandon the transfer.
Milan sporting director Igli Tare confirmed the club’s stance, saying: “We knew that he had problems in the past, we are evaluating everything as planned with regards to the health and fitness of the player. His qualities are undeniable. We are just trying to make the right decision for this situation.”
Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, told BILD that the deal was off once Boniface returned to Germany. “If he comes back (to Leverkusen), the Milan deal will be over. It’s no big secret,” he said.
Reports in Italy state that Milan were worried about the 24-year-old’s injury record. Boniface previously suffered two cruciate ligament injuries on the same knee during his time at Bodo/Glimt and has had recurring muscle problems since moving to the Bundesliga, missing large parts of the last two seasons.
This is the second failed transfer for Boniface this year. In January, a proposed €60 million move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr also broke down despite initial agreement.
The Nigerian international joined Leverkusen from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023 for €20.5 million. He is entering his third season in Germany and still has three years remaining on his current contract.
Boniface’s future at Leverkusen under new manager Erik Ten Hag remains uncertain.
