Ugandan Olympian, Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away in Kenya, four days after suffering severe burns in a domestic violence attack.
The Uganda Olympic Committee confirmed her death on Thursday, with President Donald Rukare expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
“We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei… following a vicious attack by her boyfriend.
“This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure,” Rukare said in a statement on X.
The horrific incident occurred on Sunday at Cheptegei’s home in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya.
According to local police, her partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly doused her in petrol before setting her on fire.
Cheptegei, 33, had recently competed in the marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she finished 44th.
Following the attack, Cheptegei suffered burns on 80% of her body and was hospitalized at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kenya.
Medical staff fought to save her life, but her condition worsened, and she passed away on Thursday due to multiple organ failure.
According to AFP, a medical officer at the hospital shared, “All her organs failed last night,” confirming the tragic end to her battle for survival.
The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) released a statement mourning Cheptegei’s death and condemning the domestic violence that led to her untimely demise.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence.
“As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” the statement read.
