The Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) of UEFA has granted Manchester City and Manchester United clearance to participate in European competitions next season.
Both Manchester City and the Spanish team Girona have qualified for the Champions League. There were initial concerns about their eligibility, as both clubs are part of the City Football Group.
Manchester United secured a spot in the Europa League by winning the FA Cup, along with Nice, a Ligue 1 team also controlled by Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group.
Naija News reports that the potential conflict arises from UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, which prohibit two clubs under the same ownership from competing in the same European competition.
To resolve this issue, significant changes were made to the ownership, governance, and financial support structures of the involved clubs.
UEFA announced that these modifications would significantly limit the investors’ influence and decision-making power.
Shares in Girona and Nice have been transferred to independent trustees through a blind trust structure supervised by the CFCB.
This arrangement is set for the 2024/2025 season, after which the shares will revert to City Football Group and INEOS.
