Two Minors Escape From Boko Haram’s Den Four Years After Abduction

Boko Haram Attacks Military Camp in Niger State

The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the reunion of two minors, Ayuba Ishaku and Yakubu Haruna, both aged 13, with their families, four years after being abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in Mandaragrau village, Biu Local Government Area of the state.

Naija News reports that the teenagers were among scores of women and children seized during a violent attack on the community in December 2019, and taken into deep captivity in the Tumbun Mota area of Kukawa LGA, near Lake Chad.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, the boys made a daring escape on the night of July 8, 2025, when most of the terrorists had gone out for an operation.

The statement reads, “The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the safe receipt and successful reunion of two courageous boys with their families, following their escape from Boko Haram captivity after four years.

“They navigated through the bush to nearby villages and communities before they eventually found themselves in Maiduguri on July 12, 2025, around 5:30pm, and reported at the ITE Divisional Police Headquarters.

During interrogation, the boys narrated how they were abducted during the 2019 raid and transported to a terrorist enclave in Mangari, a remote settlement under the control of Boko Haram.

“In captivity, they were forced to serve as domestic aides and also underwent training on how to service firearms,” the police revealed.

Their account highlighted the harrowing conditions under which they lived and the months-long planning that went into their eventual escape.

Following their arrival in Maiduguri, the boys were immediately taken into protective custody by the police, where they were provided care, food, and shelter.

Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, efforts were swiftly made to trace the boys’ families.

“Consequently, Mr. Ishaku Gaji, father of Ayuba Ishaku, was identified and he confirmed that the boys, along with several others, were indeed abducted on December 29, 2019,” the police spokesperson stated.
