Newcastle United have completed the signing of Swedish forward, Anthony Elanga, from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth up to £55m.
Newcastle will pay a fixed fee of £52m for the 23-year-old, plus £3m in performance-related add-ons.
Liverpool Retires Shirt Number 20
Premier League side Liverpool has retired shirt number 20 to honour their late footballer, Diogo Jota.
This means that no player contracted to the club will ever wear the shirt number. Note that Liverpool has never retired a shirt number in their 133-year history.
Liverpool decided after consulting with Jota’s wife, Rute, and other members of his family.
Naija News reports that Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andra Silva, died in a car crash on July 3, 2025.
The Reds have also announced plans to pay tribute to them during Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Preston.
There will be a rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before the 3pm kick-off and Preston will lay a wreath alongside the away supporters, Liverpool said.
A minute’s silence will then be observed, with digital tributes displayed on the stadium’s big screen and pitchside LED boards.
Players from both teams will wear black armbands.
The pre-match programme will also feature written tributes to Jota and Silva.
Nigerian players on the move
Super Eagles goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye has officially signed with Greek Super League side FC Volos on a two-year deal.
Adebayo Adeleye, 25, joins the Greek club from Cypriot side Enosis Neon Paralimni after featuring in 30 matches in the previous season.
Adeleye’s journey has seen him climb the ranks from Israeli clubs Hapoel Katamon and Hapoel Jerusalem to Cyprus, and now to the Greek top flight.
FC Volos will hope his experience and agility between the sticks will help improve on their 11th-place finish last season.
Despite making just one appearance for the Nigerian national team, Adeleye remains a name to watch, having narrowly missed selection for the 2023 AFCON squad in Côte d’Ivoire.
In Scotland, Motherwell are on the brink of signing Nigerian winger Ibrahim Said from Viborg.
A fee of £75,000 has reportedly been agreed between both clubs, with the 23-year-old already in Scotland undergoing medicals.
Said caught the eye at the 2019 U-17 World Cup in Brazil, where he netted three goals for Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets.
Since moving to Denmark, he has racked up 11 goals and 11 assists in 112 appearances for Viborg. His former coach Jens Berthel Askou, now at Motherwell, is understood to have been instrumental in pushing for the transfer.
In Turkey, Galatasaray have made a fresh push for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed the Turkish champions submitted a new offer involving a €70 million fee and bank guarantees for staggered payments. Napoli are yet to respond.
Marcus Rashford wants a Barcelona move
Over in England, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is reportedly prepared to accept a 40% pay cut to secure a move to Barcelona.
According to The Touchline, Rashford dreams of donning the Blaugrana jersey and has made it clear he wants a starring role under new boss Hansi Flick. With England’s 2026 World Cup plans on his mind, Rashford is prioritising regular playing time.
Barcelona’s interest in the 27-year-old has intensified after they failed to land top target Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao.
Rashford, who spent a stint on loan at Aston Villa last season, fell out with United manager Ruben Amorim and was frozen out of the squad, paving the way for an exit.
Meanwhile, Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres is escalating his standoff with the Portuguese club.
Romano reports the Swedish international has declared he will not train with the squad again and is solely focused on a move to Arsenal.
