Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero Criticizes Spurs’ Board After Chelsea Defeat

Tottenham Hotspur defender, Cristian Romero has voiced his frustrations with the club’s board, criticizing their lack of investment in the squad following the team’s disappointing 4-3 defeat to Chelsea at home.

This match was particularly disheartening as Spurs let slip a commanding 2-0 lead, showcasing their struggles in maintaining performance throughout the game.

Currently, under the management of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham has managed to secure only one victory in their last seven matches across all competitions, raising concerns about the team’s trajectory.

During an interview with Spanish broadcaster Telemundo Deportes after the heart-wrenching loss, Cristian Romero lamented that the insufficient financial backing from the board is causing Tottenham to lag behind their rivals in the Premier League.

Romero highlighted the contrasting approaches of competing clubs, stating, “Manchester City competes every year; you can see how Liverpool continually strengthens its squad. Chelsea, despite facing difficulties, has also invested in bolstering their team, and now they’re starting to reap the rewards. Those are the examples we need to follow.”

Romero emphasized the urgency for the club’s leadership to acknowledge the gravity of their situation: “You have to realize that something is going wrong, and hopefully, they [the board] will come to that realization soon.”

Following the loss to Chelsea, Tottenham found themselves languishing in the lower half of the Premier League table, positioned in 11th place after 15 fixtures.

The club’s recent struggles have not only raised questions about the team’s performance but have also led to a history of managerial changes within a short span.

Romero, who has played under five different managers—including interim coaches—since his arrival at Spurs in 2021, believes the onus of responsibility should not fall on Postecoglou. Instead, he feels that the board should be held accountable for the club’s ongoing issues.

“The narrative has remained the same over the past few years—first, the players come under scrutiny, then the coaching staff is altered, yet it perpetually returns to the same individuals who are truly responsible,” Romero noted in a translated interview.

He expressed hope that those in charge would finally recognize who the real culprits are and take the necessary steps for improvement. “They must understand the truly responsible parties so we can move forward positively, because this is a beautiful club that, with the right structure and investment, could easily contend for the title every year”, he added.
