President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, on the occasion of his 73rd birthday.
Naija News reports that the President, in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Bishop Kukah as a highly revered priest whose influence extends beyond the pulpit.
Tinubu praised the cleric’s lifelong commitment to social justice and care for the underprivileged, noting that his work has shaped development and governance debates in Nigeria and Africa.
“Bishop Kukah is a highly revered priest, whose compassion for the poor and underprivileged continues to influence people-centred development policies in Nigeria and Africa,” the President said.
He added that the cleric has successfully balanced spiritual duties with intellectual interventions on how democracy can be a tool for good governance.
Highlighting Kukah’s contributions to nation-building, Tinubu recalled his involvement in major national assignments aimed at strengthening democracy and promoting unity.
“Bishop Kukah’s role in the struggle for the return of democracy in Nigeria and his support for peace and harmony are remarkable,” the statement read.
It further listed the cleric’s service as a member of Nigeria’s Truth Commission, Secretary of the Political Reform Conference, member of the Electoral Reform Committee, and Chairman of the Inter-religious Dialogue Committee, where he worked tirelessly to foster harmony between Christians and Muslims.
