Nottingham Forest and Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi has returned to full training after enduring a life-threatening abdominal injury that sidelined him for months.
Taiwo Awoniyi, who suffered a ruptured intestine in May, underwent a two-phase surgical procedure that included an induced coma and a successful wound closure.
His return was confirmed on Tuesday via the Super Eagles’ official X handle, which posted: “Taiwo Awoniyi returns to full training after that serious abdominal injury in May. Great to see him back on the grass.”
Awoniyi’s presence on the training pitch is not just a relief for Forest but also a timely boost for the Super Eagles, who are gearing up for upcoming international fixtures.
The 27-year-old’s resilience and swift recovery have been applauded by fans and teammates alike, especially after reports in May revealed the seriousness of his condition and the delicate nature of his surgeries.
Meanwhile, Nigerian international, Christantus Uche, is stirring up transfer talk in Spain. The Getafe midfielder has missed consecutive training sessions as he reportedly wants a Premier League move.
Uche, 22, was notably absent from Getafe’s pre-season camp in Valencia and has yet to report for training, an absence the club claims was “authorised.”
However, insiders suggest the player is pushing hard for a move, with interest from Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Club president Ángel Torres commented on the situation during the club’s new jersey unveiling, saying: “Uche doesn’t even know what he wants. He has offers from Serie A but he wants to leave only if he goes to the Premier League, I don’t know why. This week we will meet with him and see him.”
According to reports from AS, Getafe are standing firm on the €25 million release clause in Uche’s contract, which remains valid until 2028. The clause becomes officially active from January 1, 2025.
Additionally, Uche’s former club AD Ceuta, from which he joined Getafe in February 2024, is entitled to between 12% and 20% of any profit from his future sale.
Despite no official bids yet, the Premier League trio have reportedly made their intentions clear. Leeds United, in particular, are said to be exploring Uche as a creative alternative to Brenden Aaronson, whose future at Elland Road remains uncertain.
“The Premier League trio would be willing to pay an amount close to €20m for the attacker,” Marca reported. “He has a €25m release clause, which is affordable for the English clubs.”
