Three officers of the Nigeria Police Force have been reportedly killed by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbi State.
Naija News reports that the tragedy struck on Friday evening when the assailants ambushed the security operatives in Zogirma, a community in the Bunza Local Government Area.
The officers were part of a combined police team responding to an attempted attack by the armed gang on commuters along the Zogirma-Tilli road.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, said the officers were engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire with the suspected bandits, resulting in casualties on both sides.
“As a result, several suspected Lakurawa bandits were neutralised while others escaped to the nearby forest with fatal injuries. Regrettably, three brave Police Officers lost their lives during the encounter,” Abubakar stated.
He added that the Divisional Police Officer in Zogirma swiftly mobilised personnel, with backup from the No. 36 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Birnin Kebbi, but the attackers had already fled into the forest.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Bello M. Sani, in a statement on Saturday, praised the gallantry and sacrifice of the fallen officers and prayed for the repose of their souls.
“We honour their bravery and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their efforts will not be forgotten,” CP Sani said.
He assured residents that the command remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property in Kebbi, adding that efforts to track down the fleeing suspects are ongoing.
The police also appealed to the public to support ongoing security operations by reporting any suspicious activity.
“Residents are advised to remain vigilant and promptly report any unusual movement or behaviour to the nearest police station for immediate response,” CSP Abubakar urged.
Naija News reports that the Lakurawa group is one of several armed gangs operating in parts of northern Nigeria, often linked to violent crimes including kidnappings, killings, and highway robberies.
The Zogirma-Tilli road has become a growing concern due to repeated attacks by criminal elements.
