The Super Falcons of Nigeria ended their preparation for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in grand style as they defeated their West African rivals, Ghana in a warm-up game.
The Super Falcons and the Black Queens of Ghana faced off in a friendly game in Casablanca, Morocco, on Sunday and the tie ended in a 3-1 win for Nigeria.
During the game, which took place at the Lanoria Sports Complex ahead of the 2024 WAFCON, which will kick off on July 5 in Morocco, Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 34th minute.
Chiwendu Ihezuo scored the opener after her powerful shot took a strong deflection off a Ghanaian defender. It was first thought to be an own goal but was later confirmed to be Ihezuo’s goal.
Before half-time, the Super Falcons were already two goals up thanks to Asisat Oshoala, who converted a penalty kick following a foul inside the eighteen-yard box.
During the second half, the Super Falcons continued to dominate the Black Queens and their efforts paid off again in the 51st minute when Rasheedat Ajibade made her presence felt in the score sheet.
The game didn’t end without a consolation for the Black Stars. The Ghanaian side pulled one back in the 88th minute through the boots of Alice Kusi.
The 3-1 win came about a week after coach Justin Madugu and his girls drew with Portugal in an international friendly. The two results are seen as a moral booster for the Super Falcons, who will kick off their 2024 WAFCON campaign against Tunisia on Sunday.
