Steven Bergwijn, who recently joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad, has hit back at Netherlands’ head coach, Ronald Koeman, for dropping him off the national team football.
Recall that coach Koeman recently announced the Netherlands squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Germany.
However, to Steven Bergwijn’s surprise, he was left out of the squad by the former Barcelona manager.
Koeman not only excluded Bergwijn from the squad but also criticized his choice to leave Ajax for Saudi Pro League side, Al-Ittihad.
The former FC Barcelona coach stated that as long as he is the coach, Bergwijn will not play for the Netherlands national team again.
Having been an integral part of the Netherlands squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024, Bergwijn has retaliated against Koeman’s comments, expressing his disinterest in playing under the Dutch coach’s leadership any longer.
“I no longer have the desire to represent Ronald Koeman,” Bergwijn told Telegraaf. “I am unwilling to play for someone who has depicted me in the media in the way he has.
“He could have conversed with me and listened to my perspective before making such remarks. How can he make such statements without consulting me?”
