Senate Minority Leader and a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Senator Abba Moro, has called for adherence to an unwritten peace accord that rotates the presidency between the Northern and Southern regions of Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the lawmaker insisted that the South should produce the president in the 2027 election, to complete the eight-year power rotation cycle.
Naija News reports that Moro highlighted the fallout of the PDP’s decision to field former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, as its 2023 presidential candidate.
He warned that flouting the informal North–South zoning agreement would cost the party victory.
“In 2023 … PDP picked Atiku Abubakar against the code of an unwritten agreement of North‑South presidency. It backfired. The majority of Nigerians … chose a southern candidate to fulfil the righteousness of the unwritten convention,” he said, referring to the electorate’s rejection of consecutive northern rule under Buhari–Atiku.
Moro said this unwritten pact envisioned the presidency alternating between Nigeria’s major regions.
He contended that with President Tinubu (a southerner) now completing one term, the South was entitled to hold the office until 2027 to comply with the two-term rotation.
Moro advised that any political parties contemplating fielding a northerner in 2027 risk the same mistake, losing popular support once again. Outlining the logic, he cautioned:
“The reasonable thing to do is: the South should produce the next president to complete eight years of the South, and automatically … Nigerians will be looking up to the North to produce the next president in 2031,” the PDP chieftain said.
Moreo reminded viewers that the constitution limits presidents to two four-year terms, and warned against any attempt to push beyond that.
Good Riddance To Bad Rubbish – Moro On PDP Defections
Speaking further at the interview, Moro did not shy away from addressing internal PDP drama.
He said the departure of Atiku and his 2023 running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, cleared the way for internal unity:
Moro stated, “Their exit is good riddance to bad rubbish… they were complicit in the squabbles that infected the party [after the election].”
Pointing to the PDP’s recovery, he expressed confidence that the party could rally and rebuild as a strong opposition.
Naija News reports that a recent political development saw top figures including Atiku, Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, ex-governors Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El‑Rufai adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their umbrella party for 2027, hoping to challenge Tinubu.
However, Moro hinted the alliance might struggle if the South is shut out.
He emphasised: “Opposition coalitions without equitable zoning risk repeating 2023’s failure to connect with Nigerian voters.”
