Senator Victor Umeh Urges Igbos Not To Forget Christian Chukwu

The senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Victor Umeh, has reminded the Igbos why they should never forget late Christian Chukwu.

The senator said Christian Chukwu, who served as the captain of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Rangers International, used the club to bring a smile to the faces of the Igbos after the Nigerian civil war in the 1970s.

Umeh recalls how Chukwu and his teammate at Rangers brought pride to the southeastern part of the country, especially whenever they defeated a team in other parts of the country during a major competition.

The senator stated this during a condolence visit to the family of Christian Chukwu who passed away in April 2025 and will be buried on August 16, 2025.

The Senator said: “Chairman Christian Chukwu made Ndigbo proud with his Football Career.

“His role in Rangers International Football Club remains indelible in our hearts.

“Chairman Chukwu and his Team’s impressive performance made us forget the sad memories of the Biafran War, which made Rangers and its players at the time become idols, which we all adored.

“Rangers International Football Club played a significant Role in the emancipation and reintegration of the Igbos after the Nigerian Civil War in the 70s.

“The club served as a symbol of Igbo identity, resilience, and gave us a sense of pride in Nigeria, especially when they defeated major Clubs in the National League and International Football Competitions.

“I can recall their notable victories, including the defeat of IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan also known as the 3SC in the 1975 Challenge Cup final and beating them again in the semi-final of the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977 and the defeat of Alyufsalam Rocks of Ilorin in the 1976 Challenge Cup final, to mention but a few. Rangers made us really proud.

“Through its successes and strong Igbo Identity, Rangers gave us, the Igbo people, a sense of belonging, purpose, and psychological healing at the time and during their matches we left everything to watch them live.

“Chairman Christian Chukwu and his men did their best and we shall continue to remember them both in death and those of them that are still alive. We shall also remember their families because their Legacy lives on in our hearts.”
