The Senate will, on Wednesday, hold a special plenary session in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, in London after a prolonged illness.
Naija News reports that the Red Chamber disclosed this on Tuesday, noting that the tribute session would reflect on the late president’s legacies and his contributions to Nigeria’s national development.
The announcement comes days after the Federal Executive Council held a similar event in Abuja.
During the FEC tribute held last Thursday, President Bola Tinubu hailed Buhari’s leadership style, describing him as a man who “led the country with restraint, governed with dignity, and bore the burdens of leadership without complaint.”
Recall that Buhari, Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader, was buried in his hometown, Daura in Katsina State, last week, in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from within and outside the country.
He served as Nigeria’s civilian president between 2015 and 2023, and earlier as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
No New States Have Been Created – Senate Declares
Meanwhile, the Senate on Tuesday dismissed viral social media claims suggesting that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review had approved the creation of new states.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, made the clarification on the floor of the Senate following a motion raised by Senator Abdul Ningi, who expressed concern over the spread of misleading reports.
Akpabio stated categorically that while over 42 proposals for state creation have been submitted, none has passed the rigorous legislative and constitutional requirements.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance,” Akpabio stated.
He further noted that some communities had already begun holding meetings on how to manage their “new states” based on unfounded social media information.
The Senate President urged the public to await official communication from the National Assembly on any constitutional amendments or related matters, stressing that only verified reports from the legislature should be relied upon.
