Ruth Otabor: When Phyna Was Crying For Help, Nigerians Were Dragging Her – Toyin Lawani

Fashion designer Toyin Lawani has reacted to the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna.

The socialite in a post on her Instagram page said that while Phyna was struggling with her sister’s illness, some people were distracted by things that did not matter.

Naija News reports that she pointed to a lack of empathy and understanding among Nigerians, saying that many people respond to tragedy with judgment rather than support.

She wrote: “I hope you lots are happy now and can finally rest. When Phyna was busy crying and screaming out asking for help, half of you kept dragging her for silly reasons that had nothing to do with her sister’s life. Nigerians lack empathy and emotional intelligence. You still wonder why some people don’t share their pain and illness on this platform, but the RIPs will be more than the help. SMH.”

In other news, reality TV star Mercy Eke has reacted to the death of Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Phyna.

Naija News reports that she died after sustaining severe injuries in a road accident involving a truck linked to the Dangote Group near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State.

The accident, which occurred on August 13, 2025, led to the amputation of her left leg at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, but she later succumbed to the complications.
