Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, Udengs Eradiri, has lauded suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for embracing genuine reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring peace and political stability in Rivers State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Eradiri, who is also a former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, said Fubara’s decision to re-align politically with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, was a courageous and necessary step for the unity and progress of the state.
Naija News reports that Eradiri urged Governor Fubara to further demonstrate commitment to peace by persuading Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to withdraw the Supreme Court suit filed against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over a potential state of emergency in Rivers.
“This move is crucial to removing the remaining legal and political hurdles to Fubara’s reinstatement. The path to peace must be cleared entirely,” Eradiri said.
The engineer-turned-politician warned Fubara to stay clear of those he described as “crisis merchants” who had previously taken advantage of the political unrest in Rivers.
“These crisis merchants are not tired yet. They will still devise some dubious strategies to reach you with their fake love and selfish advice to stampede you into derailing the new accord. Keep them far away from you and avoid making any contact with them,” Eradiri cautioned.
He urged Fubara not to be tempted to abandon the peace accord, saying such a move would dent his credibility and plunge the state back into chaos.
“I advise Fubara to cherish this new path to peace and avoid entertaining any thought or idea that walking away from the accord will yield a better result. Any attempt to resort to such reasoning will only bring dangerous consequences,” he said.
Eradiri also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for brokering the new peace deal, describing the president’s intervention as a clear show of love for Rivers State and its people.
“The President’s action was borne out of his true love for the state and commitment to averting total breakdown of law and order,” he said.
He praised Wike for exhibiting magnanimity in forgiving Fubara and spearheading the reconciliation process, calling him a loyal supporter of the President and a pillar of peace in the ongoing effort.
“Chief Wike has shown he is a leader with a large heart. His willingness to forgive and facilitate peace is commendable,” he added.
Eradiri also urged the FCT Minister to keep Fubara close and shield him from manipulative political actors looking to sow new seeds of discord.
The former IYC leader commended suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, and other lawmakers, including Rivers elders led by Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, for playing a central role in facilitating peace.
“I appeal to all stakeholders to forgive and forget all that transpired during the crisis. Let the reconciliation be total and devoid of acrimony. The future of Rivers State depends on this unity,” he said.
