Rena Wakama, the head coach of Nigeria women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, is hoping for a positive outing at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Rena Wakama is currently training her team in Germany ahead of the Paris Olympics, which will commence on July 26 and end on August 11.
Wakama and her girls are expected to test their abilities against the German basketball team in a friendly game in Berlin on July 19. Following the said game, the Nigeria national basketball side will fly to Serbia to take on the country’s women’s basketball team in Belgrade on July 21.
The D’Tigress are expected to fly to France immediately after the friendly game to play another pre-tournament warmup match. This time around, it will be against Japan in Lille on July 24.
Coach Rena Wakama and her girls will begin their campaign at the Olympics in Group B which is regarded as the group of death. It houses three other teams – Australia, Canada and France – who are in the top 10 of the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) rankings.
D’Tigress’ first game at the Olympics is against Australia on July 29. Afterwards, they will face France on August 1, and then Canada on August 4.
In an interview with NBBF media, Wakama who led the D’Tigress to win a record-equalling fourth Afrobasket title in Rwanda in 2023 said she is confident in the ability of her team.
“Things have been going well in the camp in the last few days as we have had great practice sessions and the girls are in great spirits”, she said.
“The girls are responding well to training and getting better, every day. And that’s what matters.
“I’m confident that the girls will be able to display their talents when we get to Paris. I’m excited and looking forward to the games.”
