Real Madrid's Mbappe Sues PSG For Alleged Extortion, Coercion

France star and Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappe, has initiated legal action against his previous club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), alleging attempted extortion and coercion to sign a new contract in 2023 by prohibiting him from training with the team.

As reported by Le Parisien, a judicial inquiry has commenced following a complaint from the France captain regarding moral harassment.

The complaint, submitted on May 16th, focuses on PSG’s management of the 26-year-old’s circumstances during the summer of 2023, when he was removed from the first-team roster.

Currently, two investigating magistrates have been appointed to oversee the case.

The investigation officially began on Tuesday.

Naija News recalls that Mbappe departed PSG as a free agent to join Real Madrid last year. However, reports by the Paris prosecutor’s office on Thursday, June 27, 2025, said Mbappé has accused PSG of moral harassment in a legal document.

The Legal Battle

Mbappe is claiming PSG owes him €55 million ($61 million) in unpaid wages.

Mbappé is also dissatisfied with the treatment he received from the Ligue 1 club when he was sidelined prior to the 2023-24 season, following his choice not to renew his club contract.

The prosecutor’s office stated that Mbappé is “denouncing the ‘lofting’ he alleges to have experienced at Paris Saint-Germain.”

The term “lofting” is used in France to refer to a practice that entails isolating or excluding a player from the main squad for sporting, administrative, or disciplinary reasons.

Mbappé joined Real Madrid last summer on a free transfer after netting a club-record 256 goals in seven years at PSG, who secured the Champions League title without him this year.

How Mbappe Left PSG

Mbappé’s association with PSG concluded amidst significant tension, as some supporters booed him during his final home match at Parc des Princes.

PSG felt betrayed by Mbappé after presenting him with the most lucrative contract in the club’s history when he signed in 2022.

However, Mbappé was reportedly discontented because he believed that promises to recruit key players were not fulfilled. Upon his signing in 2022, he was showcased to fans while holding a jersey emblazoned with 2025.

Mbappé was said to be frustrated since the contract was valid until 2024, with an option for an additional year.

In June 2023, Mbappé shocked PSG by notifying the club that he would not exercise the option for an extra year. With his contract effectively entering its final year, PSG found themselves in a position where they needed to sell Mbappé’s contract to prevent losing him for nothing when it expired.

His tenure at PSG could have concluded that summer amid a fraught transfer standoff.

After informing the club of his decision not to extend, Mbappé was excluded from the squad for a preseason tour to Japan and South Korea and was compelled to train separately from the first team. PSG indicated they preferred to transfer him rather than allow him to depart for free in 2024, yet he turned down a €300m ($351.4m) transfer to Saudi Pro League team Al Hilal.

PSG omitted Mbappé from the opening league match of the season, but he quickly rejoined the lineup after discussions with the club.

In April, Mbappé’s legal representatives announced intentions to take action against PSG for harassment due to the treatment he received during that period.
