In a major shift for football broadcasting in the United Kingdom, Premier League TV coverage is set for a dramatic transformation from the 2025-2026 season.
For the upcoming season, there will be touchline interviews of substituted players and limited camera access to dressing rooms among the new features being introduced.
These innovations will form part of the new four-year domestic television rights deal worth a record-breaking £6.6 billion.
As part of the deal, Sky Sports and TNT Sports will now be able to broadcast up to 270 live games per season, enhancing fan access to the top tier of English football like never before.
According to reports first published by The Telegraph, camera operators will also be permitted to briefly step onto the pitch to film close-up shots of goal celebrations, another departure from traditional coverage methods.
Though full details are yet to be confirmed by the Premier League, BBC Sport understands that players who are substituted during matches will be interviewed on the touchline after a brief cool-down period.
However, it remains unclear how frequently these interviews will occur or which matches they will apply to.
As for dressing room access, cameras will be granted limited entry but will not be allowed to film during team talks, preserving some privacy for players and coaching staff.
These changes are more in line with the broadcasting approach seen in American sports, where real-time, behind-the-scenes access is commonplace. Until now, such practices have rarely featured in UK football coverage.
The new TV deal also ensures that the BBC will retain its long-standing rights to Premier League highlights via Match of the Day, Football Focus, and through expanded digital offerings on its online platforms.
As the Premier League continues to evolve its global appeal and fan engagement strategies, these changes are expected to significantly enhance the viewing experience for supporters both at home and abroad.
