The Plateau State command of the Nigeria Police Force has firmly dismissed circulating rumours about a potential bomb attack on the University of Jos (UniJos) and other locations within Jos metropolis, describing the reports as unverified and lacking credible evidence.

Naija News reports that the rumours gained momentum on social media following the appearance of a memo, purportedly from the university’s security division, which was said to be signed by the Acting Chief Security Officer.

The memo, dated July 4, 2025, raised concerns about a potential bombing within the University community.

However, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Emmanuel Adesina, swiftly responded, assuring residents that the Police Command had not verified any such threat.

While the rumours remain unsubstantiated, CP Adesina emphasised that the Police are taking the matter seriously and have deployed multiple security measures to ensure public safety.

As part of these precautionary actions, CP Adesina ordered the immediate deployment of the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, also known as the Anti-Bomb Squad, to conduct a thorough sweep of the University of Jos campus and other sensitive areas across Jos.

In addition, bomb technicians, specialised patrol teams, and officers from the State Intelligence Department (SID) have been strategically stationed at known flashpoints in the metropolis to reinforce the existing security framework.

A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, urged residents to remain calm and stay vigilant.

The Police also urged members of the public to promptly report any suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest Police station or security agency.

Adesina reiterated the Plateau State Police Command’s commitment to community policing, emphasising the importance of timely and accurate information from the public in enhancing security efforts.

“We urge the peace-loving people of Plateau to go about their lawful activities without fear. While the threat remains unverified, our officers are fully mobilised to respond to any situation. Your safety is our top priority,” CP Adesina reassured.

The Police Command also urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could cause panic or disrupt social harmony, reaffirming its dedication to maintaining peace and order in the state.

A bomb explosion in Borno State has claimed the lives of an undetermined number of travellers journeying from Kala-Balge to the Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Area of the state.

Reports obtained by Naija News revealed that the sad event took place on Monday evening when a vehicle en route from Rann, the administrative centre of Kala-Balge, triggered an improvised explosive device.

The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH, stating that efforts are underway to gather the required information.

“I am aware that it happened. Please, I will get back to you. I am still gathering necessary information,” Daso told journalists.

According to local reports, it has been stated that eight individuals lost their lives in the explosion, with numerous others suffering serious injuries.

A source, who requested anonymity, mentioned, ‘Women and children were affected. Approximately eight people have died.‘

The United Nations (UN) has claimed that it discovered five bombs in a wall of Mosul’s Al-Nuri mosque, allegedly planted by the Islamic State (ISIS) group years ago.

The UNESCO team, conducting restoration work in the northern Iraqi city, found these large-scale devices designed to cause significant destruction to the site.

The agency’s representative informed AFP on Friday that the explosives were located in the southern wall of the prayer hall.

Naija News understands that the Al-Nuri mosque and the leaning minaret Al-Hadba, both significant historical structures, were destroyed during the battle to liberate the city from IS.

The Iraqi army has accused IS of planting explosives at the site and detonating them.

UNESCO has been actively involved in the restoration of this site and other architectural heritage in Mosul, much of which was devastated during the 2017 battle for the city.

“The Iraqi armed forces immediately secured the area, and the situation is now fully under control,” UNESCO noted.

According to the report, one of the explosives was removed, but four others remain connected to each other and are expected to be cleared in the coming days.

“These explosive devices were hidden inside a wall, which was specially rebuilt around them: it explains why they could not be discovered when the site was cleared by Iraqi forces in 2020,” the agency said.

Iraqi General Tahseen al-Khafaji, representative of the Joint Operations Command of different Iraqi forces, verified the finding of “multiple explosive devices from ISIS jihadists in Al-Nuri mosque.”

Reports had it that it was in the Al-Nuri mosque that Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the former leader of IS, declared the formation of the group’s “caliphate” in July 2014.

The jihadists seized extensive areas of land in Iraq and the nearby Syria, which they governed with cruelty.

In 2017, Iraqi forces, supported by a US-led coalition, expelled IS from Mosul.
