The Rivers State Police Command has accused two senior officials of Ahoada East Local Government Area, the Chief Security Officer (CSO), Hector Ekakita, and the Chief of Staff (COS) to the council, of masterminding the violent attack on the LGA’s Sole Administrator, Goodluck Iheamnacho, on Friday.
The command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, alleging that Ekakita and the COS led over 30 hoodlums to the council secretariat where the embattled administrator was beaten, stripped of personal items, and coerced into signing a resignation letter.
The statement confirmed that Iheamnacho sustained injuries during the attack and is currently undergoing treatment. “During the attack, the hoodlums assaulted the Sole Administrator, stole his mobile phones, forced him to sign a letter purporting his resignation, and carted away vital documents including official and personal papers from his office,” the police said.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, reportedly visited the scene of the incident alongside heads of other security agencies and immediately ordered Ekakita, the COS, and all identified participants to report to the State Police Headquarters for questioning.
The police commissioner warned that failure to honour the invitation would attract “severe consequences,” reaffirming the command’s commitment to restoring order.
“We urge residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperate with the authorities to maintain peace and order across the State,” the CP said.
The crisis deepened after a resignation letter allegedly signed by Iheamnacho surfaced online, suggesting he had voluntarily stepped down.
However, in a swift reaction, Iheamnacho denied authoring the letter, stating he was forced to sign it under duress after being attacked at the secretariat by individuals believed to be political thugs.
The broader political context may also be fuelling the unrest. Local government councils in Rivers State are currently under emergency rule, with 23 LGAs being run by appointees of Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), most of whom are believed to be loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
