Candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory in all 25 local government chairmanship positions contested in the election held on Saturday, July 13th, 2024.
Chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, Jerry Agbaike, mentioned on Sunday that one of the PDP candidates won his seat without facing any opposition.
Naija News understands that the PDP candidates contested against rivals from other parties and clinched victories in the 24 local government zones where voting took place.
However, there was no election in the Udu Local Government Area as the PDP candidate, Vincent Oyibode, emerged unopposed for the chairmanship position.
Additionally, PDP candidates won elections in 499 out of the state’s electoral wards, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) picked electoral ward one in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The newly appointed leaders will officially begin their duties on Monday, July 15, 2024, under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The Delta election came just after a Supreme Court verdict mandated the Federal Government to directly transfer the 20.60% monthly stipend given to the third tier of governance (local governments) to their specified accounts instead of into the governors’ accounts.
Moreover, the Supreme Court made a decision on Thursday that banned governors with too much authority from dissolving local government councils that were democratically chosen.
