The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the outcome of the August 16 bye-election for the Okura State Constituency in Dekina Local Government Area, insisting that the exercise was marred by irregularities and should be annulled.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the state chairman of the party, Enemona Anyebe, accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of conducting a flawed process that disenfranchised a significant number of voters.
The opposition party alleged that voting did not take place in many polling units across the constituency, while electoral materials were either unavailable or inaccessible in some locations.
According to the PDP, these lapses robbed the people of their right to freely choose their representative in the state assembly.
INEC had declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election with 55,073 votes, while the PDP recorded just 1,038 votes.
However, the PDP questioned the credibility of the results, describing them as inconsistent with previous voting patterns in the constituency.
“The figures released by INEC differ sharply from past electoral outcomes, and it is doubtful that such a large turnout could have been recorded given reports of low voter participation,” the statement said.
The PDP called on INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to order an impartial review of the bye-election to restore public confidence in the electoral system.
“As a responsible political party, we have remained calm and restrained in our response because we believe democracy must thrive without conflict,” the statement added.
The opposition maintained that only a fresh poll, conducted under transparent conditions, would reflect the will of the people of Okura constituency.
