The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that a total of 6,382 athletes and officials will take part in the 2025 National Youth Games, scheduled for Asaba, Delta State, from August 29 to September 6, 2025.

The NSC arrived at this figure after the conclusion of the Digital Registration Management (DRM) process across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the NSC, the participant list includes 4,961 athletes, 635 coaches, 386 team officials, and 400 state delegates. Although Gombe State is yet to complete registration for its 74-member delegation, organisers assured that the development does not affect the confirmed tally.

In total, athletes will compete in 37 sporting events, ranging from athletics, football and basketball to less-celebrated sports aimed at broadening talent discovery.

Host state and defending champions Team Delta are widely tipped as favourites once again, but they are expected to face stiff competition from Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Edo and other states eager to end their dominance.

Since its inception, the Games have produced several athletes who went on to represent Nigeria at continental and global competitions. Organisers believe the 2025 edition will build on that legacy, with scouts, coaches and administrators closely watching for the next breakout stars.

With final preparations in full swing, attention now turns to the opening ceremony on August 29, which will set the stage for nine days of sporting event in Asaba.
