Gunmen suspected to be bandits reportedly attacked Information Drive, an area located in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and caused palpable tension last weekend.
Reports reaching Naija News on Monday (today) revealed that the assailants,, on Friday night, invaded the State newspaper outlet, the Pioneer Newspaper, resulting in the death of one of their security personnel, Edet Obot.
It was gathted that the criminals, who broke into the newspaper’s building around midday, escaped with valuable items like a generator set, televisions, and wire cables.
Umoette Umoette, the newspaper’s General Manager, was unable to be reached for comment on the incident.
However, a confidential source from the newspaper who spoke on condition of anonymity explained the incident to The PUNCH in Uyo on Monday.
He expressed regret over the loss of the security guard and suggested that the bandits might have had assistance from someone on their own team.
“It’s a very sad development to all of us here, and most unfortunate is that the security officer who was shot dead by the criminals was not even a staff of a newspaper corporation, this cannot happen without an insider’s collaboration”, the source said.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Command, ASP Timfon John, confirmed the incident to journalists, adding that the command is aware of the development
The PPRO said, “We are aware of it and on top of the situation.”
