The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦110 million to the families of 22 Kano athletes who lost their lives in a fatal accident earlier this year.
According to a statement released Thursday, August 7, by the spokesperson to the Kano State Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, each bereaved family received ₦5 million under the Victim Support Fund initiative facilitated by the First Lady.
In addition to the First Lady’s gesture, the Kano State Government announced a further ₦130 million relief package. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the state would also give ₦5 million to each bereaved family, ₦2 million to each of the 10 injured athletes, and a plot of land to each survivor.
Dawakin Tofa noted that the state had earlier disbursed ₦22 million immediately after the incident, providing ₦1 million to each family of the deceased and ₦500,000 to each injured athlete as emergency relief.
Governor Yusuf commended the First Lady for her support, describing it as “a profound demonstration of compassion, leadership, and shared humanity.”
Other contributions to the victims and their families include ₦32 million from the Ogun State Government, ₦20 million from the Jigawa State Government, and ₦2.2 million from private donor Engineer Sagir Koki.
Altogether, the total financial support has now reached ₦321.2 million, along with donations of 30 bags of rice and several housing plots. The Kano State Accountant General supervised the disbursement of the funds during a formal presentation ceremony.
Naija News reports that Governor Yusuf has announced the renaming of the Kano Sports Institute in Karfi to “Kano 22 Athletes Institute” in honour of the deceased.
To ensure fairness and compliance with Islamic law, the government assigned Sharia courts to oversee the distribution of the first tranche of funds to the families.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved families, Alhaji Baffa Indabawa, chairman of the victims’ relatives, thanked the First Lady and the state government, describing their actions as “deeply consoling and dignified.”
